Description

The Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor (SNP) is seeking a highly experienced and motivated attorney to serve as the Chief of the Litigation Review Unit. This is a senior-level position reporting directly to executive leadership and requires an attorney with exceptional legal acumen, litigation experience, and a demonstrated commitment to justice and fairness.

Job Responsibilities:
The Chief of the Litigation Review Unit will be responsible for managing and directing all post-conviction litigation and related matters within SNP, including but not limited to:

  • Assigning, Reviewing, and Editing: Overseeing all post-litigation motions submitted by staff, including CPL 440 motions, motions to vacate, resentencing applications, sealing motions, and other collateral litigation.
  • Responding to Complex Motions: Personally handling and drafting responses to the most complex and sensitive post-conviction motions.
  • Advising Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs): Serving as the office-wide legal advisor on appellate and post-conviction legal strategy, issue preservation, and sentencing matters.
  • Conviction Review Committee: Serving as a core member of the SNP Conviction Review Committee, reviewing and investigating all claims of innocence and wrongful conviction.
  • Article 78 Proceedings: Managing and responding to Article 78 petitions filed against the agency or on behalf of the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor, in coordination with other city or state legal entities as necessary.
  • Policy and Training: Contributing to policy development and internal training initiatives on legal writing, preservation of issues for appeal, and post-conviction standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and admission to practice law in the State of New York.
  • A minimum of 10 years of legal experience, including substantial criminal litigation and post-conviction or appellate experience.
  • Prior supervisory or leadership experience strongly preferred.
  • Deep understanding of New York criminal procedure, post-conviction remedies, appellate practices, and wrongful conviction review.
  • Outstanding legal writing, editing, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to handle high-profile and sensitive matters with discretion, fairness, and sound judgment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ethical prosecution and ensuring integrity in the justice system.
